Compensation Studies
University of Hawaii
The faculty union at the University of Hawaii hired JBLA to conduct a compensation study on UH faculty members in comparison to faculty members at their peer institutions. The analysis and final report were to be used during the collective bargaining sessions between the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly (UHPA) and the University of Hawaii.
JBLA compiled a group of peer institutions, taking into consideration factor such as size, enrollment, locale, and status. We created base salary models, using cost of living indexes and past trends. We then updated and expanded on the original models using current salaries, and developed an online salary comparison database and graphical presentation of salary distributions.
With the data we provided, UHPA was able to fight for pay raises and benefit increases for their faculty. The UH faculty members are now on par with other faculty members at peer institutions. We continue to update the salary data for them in order to ensure that their salaries remain comparable over time to those of their peers.
